Global Youth Participation Week – I’m recruiting!

Posted February 25th, 2010 in Youth by Nicolò

Remember all that talk about youth participation in the last few months on this blog? I’ve decided to do something about it and I need your help to make that happen.

The Global Youth Participation Week (GYPW) will be a globally coordinated campaign shining the spotlight on existing organizations and initiatives dealing with youth participation. It will act as a catalyst for funding, media exposure, volunteer recruitment and policy-makers’ attention, as well as a container for ideas and projects by those organizations or other individuals, addressing some of their existing needs and challenges with opportunities and resources.

Get to know more and join the team!

Or, if you’re interested in following the development of the initiative, but do NOT want to join our team, feel free to become a fan of the Global Youth Participation Week on Facebook and you’ll receive there updates on our work.

Will Vietnam be included in your events and initiatives ?

  2. Nicolò says:

    Hello Hau!

My intention is to make this a truly global event, inclusive of as many countries as possible. There are no concrete ideas for activities or events to be organized yet, that’s one of the steps that the team will focus on in the first phase of the development of this initiative. When these activities/events will be conceptualized, I would hope that youth organizations and individuals in every country take the leadership for implementing them and contributing to the cause, coordinating their efforts with our team and with other organizations and individuals in other countries.

If you’re interested in helping out in Vietnam, let me know (nicolo.wojewoda@gmail.com).

I am from Guyana, i am currently involved in an N.G.O called Youth Media Guyana, and we would like to be apart of this global event, and as a university student, i would encourage the idea to be celebrated on campus….how could this be done?

  4. Nicolò says:

    Hello Marvin!

Celebrating youth participation on campus is certainly a great idea, I’ll make sure that our team takes that into account when developing the concept behind our initiative. In the meanwhile, feel free to join the Facebook fan page to stay updated.

  5. Deborah says:

I’m from South Korea and I believe that I hold the same ambition of active youth involvement in the global stage. Despite the fact that young generations are those who will construct the future world, there has been lack of attention to youths. What should be done is to have the youths to be mobilized and to initiate steps toward shaping the world.

I believe that there are youth related organizations in almost every country around the world. Yet, as they have been working separately, there weren’t much changes. The first thing to be done is to select the most competent and devoted organizations from different countries around the world and to make connections for projects that could be shared and cooperatively done together.

  6. Nicolò says:

Hey Deborah, I absolutely agree with you, global cooperation among existing initiatives from different countries is one of the key ideas behind the concept of this GYPW. We also want to complement and strengthen, rather than replicate and duplicate the work that existing global youth organizations like the Global Action Youth Network (http://www.youthlink.org/) and TakingITGlobal (http://www.takingitglobal.org/) are doing. Our week needs to be a place for all individuals and organizations to come together and find something that answers their needs, while contributing together for a common goal of youth participation for all.

  12. Handy says:

Hey Nicolo, this is OYW delegate from Mongolia. I am ready to support and help GYPW. I agree with Deborah. There really is a lack of attention to youths. So I just have one initiative to make young voices heard more effectively. Can we include the following in the GYPW as a goal “The young voices get heard through the whole society of each country especially to the government and politics to make effective and fundamental decisions that all the youths are passionate about”

  13. Nicolò says:

Deniz, Pinkgold, Trishna… glad to hear you’re willing to help! Please join the Facebook fan page for updates, and if you would like to join the team that will coordinate this GYPW globally, click on the link in my blog post.

Handy, the focus on young people involved in political decision-making is one of the main ones in this GYPW (certainly, the one I’m mostly concerned with). We will definitely make sure to have an impact on that, we just need to figure out how (“we” being me and the team that I’m recruiting at the moment). What’s most certain is that it’ll involve some mix of global cooperation and local action, exploiting the diversity and leadership of the OYW community and of other similar youth networks across the world.

Thank you for the initiative, am surely behind you

  23. Bao Viet says:

Hey Nicolò! Would love to be involved in some way. Will this be during the summer thou? and also, you said it’s world-wide, does it mean there’ll be regional events- do you have a vision for it yet? Anyway, great idea man!

  24. Nicolò says:

Hey Bao, the dates are yet to be set. I first need to talk with the people at UN Youth: August 12, 2010 is International Youth Day and the start of the International Year of Youth (ending on August 11, 2011), and I would like for this GYPW to take place sometime in between those dates, but I will need to coordinate with them to make that happen. Regarding its geographical scope, I initially thought of having local events (at the city and country level) supported by a global online campaign and possibly by global events (e.g. a youth event at the UN). This is just an idea, though, and it’ll need to be discussed with the people in my team as well as with the organizations we’ll be partnering with.

  25. Yaw says:

Hey, this is really great. I like the idea of going beyond the talk. Most interested, would do i do to be involved

  26. I am also intrested in the initiative here in Kenya this is a good idea i will follow the updates in facebook to know more hope you will be keeping us updated
